Greenham and Crookham Commons Management Plan 2009-2014: Surveys & monitoring

To ensure this plan is successful and to help value the conservation work over the plan period the following surveys and monitoring will be carried out.

Compartment Survey or monitoring task Status (Nov 2008) Method 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014
All SSSI areas Monitor status of Natural England's conservation objectives
3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16 All species butterfly transect Active every year since 2006, plus some older records exist. A 1.5km transect walked Apr-Sep. Data input into Transect Walker.
10, 12 Single species butterfly transect: small blue Cupido minimus Active A 1km transect through suitable habitat, walked May/June. Data input into Transect Walker.
All heath & grassland compartments Butterfly re-introduction programme: silver-studded blue Plebeius argus Working group established Survey ant populations, suitability of heath, possible donor sites, consult with Natural England and Butterfly Conservation.
All Bryophyte survey A recent (2008) application by the Nature Conservation Bureau to the ALSF fund has been successful and a full survey will be undertaken in 2010.
All

a) Data collection and analysis

b) Set up a montitoring protocol

Funding application to the ALSF successful. All the biological records for Greenham and Crookham Common from the past 15 or so years will be collected, collated and converted to digitised lists.
All HLS areas Grassland and heathland Monitoring Set up by ALSF funded project above Set up monitoring of all the prescriptions of the HLS including lowland heathland, semi-natural grassland and broadleaf woodland. (This will be set up by an ecologist as part of a successful ALSF
All open areas of heathland Bracken monitoring A snapshot of bracken extent every 2 years to ensure it is not dominating and to identify where areas require treatment. Maintain small areas for cover within the heath and woodland edge.
Various Nightjar survey Has run every June/July since 1978 A group of surveyors records churring & flight activity across the whole site simultaneously.
All Dragonfly and damselfly survey Running annually A thorough search of larval cases, sightings and larvae is undertaken by an ecologist every year and a report produced.
All Cricket and grasshopper survey Running annually A systematic search, mainly using 'song' detected using a bat detector is undertaken every year and a report produced.
All Bird ringing Running annually The Newbury District Ornithological Club (NDOC) and bird ringer Nigel Cleere monitor nest boxes, a bird feeding station and specific targeted birds on the common.
All Amphibian survey Running annually Ponds surveyed to record toads, frogs and the 3 newts - great crested, smooth and palmate.
All Reptile survey Running ad hoc Informal survey looking through heath and under refugia to record lizards, adders, grass snakes and slow worms.
All heathland compartments Produce heathland mowing and scraping rotation work plan with map by 2009 Use GIS layer and notes provided by Natural England for central lozenges (compartments 9, 10, 11 and 12) as well as other large banks of dominant and dengerate gorse.
Various Orchid protection measures Stem the disappearance of early flowers by protecting as soon as they appear. Survey and protection of early spring flowering plants (bee orchid, green winged orchid).
All Heritage Management Plan Survey and record HER monuments along with those not currently listed on HER records (e.g. hydrants, fuel tanks).
Various Ponds management plan A survey and report on all the seasonal and permanent water features on the common.
All Fixed point photography To be established. Set up fixed points based on agreed rationale. Number and record GPS locations and orientation. Permanently mark each location on site. Photograph at each location annually at the same time(s) of year and store images for reference and ecological surveillance.
Various Snails, slugs and worms survey To be established.
All Exotic species Informal monitoring of extent, to identify potential problems and take action as necessary
